Mariah Carey has displayed some pretty odd behavior recently, like on New Year’s Eve 2017 when she gave one of the strangest performances since the time Keith Richards staggered out, punched Dick Clark in the mouth and pulled out his dick yelling “Who wants to fuck Jumpin’ Jack Flash?” The 70s were a crazy time for all of us, though. Oh, and there was the concert in Las Vegas where instead of dancing she just stood on stage without moving. People came to see you sing and dance, Mariah, not to see your Kristen Stewart impression.
In an interview with People this week, Carey revealed that she’s been living with bipolar II disorder since 2001, which probably explains some of her erratic behavior over the years.
“For a long time I thought I had a severe sleep disorder,” continues Carey, now back in the studio working on an album due later this year. “But it wasn’t normal insomnia and I wasn’t lying awake counting sheep. I was working and working and working … I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down. It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania. Eventually I would just hit a wall. I guess my depressive episodes were characterized by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad — even guilty that I wasn’t doing what I needed to be doing for my career.”
Carey, who co-parents her 6-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with ex-husband Nick Cannon, says she decided to come forward because “I’m just in a really good place right now, where I’m comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder. I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
I’m glad to hear Carey is managing her disorder, which can be quite serious. I’d hate to see her end up like Margot Kidder, you know, setting up Google alerts on the off-chance someone mentions her name even though it’s incredibly unlikely anyone will, and then spending her time writing angry comments to people who make offhanded jokes about her. I wouldn’t want to see Mariah Carey, one of our most beloved singers, end up in that sort of depressing obscurity.
Neither would Mariah’s fans on Twitter, where the skinny legend’s slim physique has become a meme.
